Our HERstory

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded on Wednesday, January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University. Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest Greek-lettered organization founded by African-American college educated women. Founded by Ethel Hedgeman-Lyle and eight of her peers, the sorority endeavors to unite college-trained women who desire to be of service to all mankind.

The story of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated women changing the campus of West Virginia University predates our chartering. From 1970 to 1972, Alpha Kappa Alpha welcomed West Virginia University students through general membership. We thank these women for their hard work and determination in planting the seeds of our beloved sisterhood on the campus of WVU. That hard work paid off on January 19, 1973, when the Great Lakes Regional Director Eva L. Evans came to Morgantown, WV to charter the Always Elegant Eta Omicron Chapter.

For over 50 years, the women of Eta Omicron have built upon the legacy of service and sisterhood established 113 years ago. The Always Elegant Ladies of Eta Omicron continue to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women to improve their social stature, maintain a progressive interest in college life, and be of service to all mankind.
